Meeting Program: Coton Jaune: Arcadian Brown Cotton - a Cajun Love Story
A 37 minute documentary film by Sharon Gordon Donnan and Suzanne Chaillot Breaux
The serendipitous discovery of an old Cajun blanket in a flea market fueled the authors’ curiosity and subsequent research. A combined love of textiles and film making, the visual and textural quality of the blankets, plus the rich human story led to the making of this film.
Although no longer daily activities for the descendants of the Acadian settlers of Southwest Louisiana, the tradition of growing natural brown cotton, hand spinning and weaving is still alive two hundred and fifty years later. The Acadian people, commonly known as Cajuns, are enormously proud of their culture and heritage and equally devoted to its preservation. The music and cuisine are most well known but the weaving tradition also embodies the heart and soul of this community.
For more than two centuries homespun cotton thread was regularly woven into bedding and clothing on large two harness floor looms throughout Acadiana. By the early 20thcentury, commercially woven fabric had become a staple and the labor-intensive spinning and weaving a part of the past. The single exception was traditional blankets woven as dowry for Cajun brides. These blankets are referred to as l’amour de maman, a mother’s love.
Bring your wheel for free spinning, and popcorn & a soda to munch on while we watch this interesting video of spinning and weaving brown cotton. We will have a short business meeting with a few things to discuss, plus show & tell, of course.

Holiday Party Gift Exchange
![]() |
| This would be a great way to use up those bits and pieces of hand spun |
Do we want to do a fiber gift exchange at the December holiday party? If we do, in order to participate the fiber must be 4 oz of ready-to-spin fiber, labelled as to what it is.
PLEASE DON'T bring 4 oz of unwashed fleece. Not everyone enjoys the washing/flicking/carding process. If you have sheep, or unwashed/unprocessed fiber, it's ok to bring it, BUT you will need to do the all the processing [including carding or combing] for the exchange and be sure it's 4oz that you will bring.
Dues for the Coming Year
Dues will be collected this meeting and the next meeting for 2023. $10.
