 NEXT MEETING: JUNE 1, 2022, 6:30 PM - 9 PM

Chiengora

(Shelly to lead topic)

  • To participate, you need to bring:
    • Your spinning wheel or drop spindle
    • Handcards
    • Soft wool for possible blending experiments
      • Scissors (maybe)

In the area now known as British Columbia and Washington State, the Coast Salish peoples long used dog fur from the now extinct Salish Wool Dog to make clothing, capes and blankets. As fur trading posts became established in the area, the introduction of imported and inexpensive machine-made blankets lowered the value of the dog fibre blanket. By the mid 1800's, this resulted not only in the decline of the use of dog fibre, but the eventual extinction of the Salish Wool Dog

Thelma, Louise, and Cocoa, the three sheep who live at The Farm, graciously provide beautiful fleeces each year. Discover how to spin their fleeces to create yarn that can be used to make wearable articles. This hands-on program teaches you to build a simple drop spindle (which you can take home after the event) and provides lessons in beginner spinning on that drop spindle. You will be able to investigate spinning on a spinning wheel via short lessons and/or demonstrations. In addition, you might choose to try hands-on experiences with fiber preparation that include flicking and hand carding the wool. Registration required, $5 per person. Call 765-567-4700 to book your spot! 1:00pm-3:00pm.

Hands-on Agenda: Spinning / Knitting with Beads

    • Spinning With Beads (Vilija)
      • To participate, you need to bring:
        • Your spinning wheel
        • A well spun single - grist does not matter.
        • Some carded fiber, top or roving is easiest, to experiment spinning the beads right in

    • Knitting with Beads using Small Crochet Hook (Lindy)
      • Notes from Lindy: (We learn best by "doing,"...) it’s a good idea ... to do hands on. I’ll have some beads for fingering weight and a few small hooks for them to use and purchase if they want to keep them.
      • To participate, you need to bring:
        • Fingering weight yarn (?)
        • Cash if you want to buy a small hook from Lindy
    • Knitting with Beads using Denture Dental Floss (Diana)
      • To participate, you need to bring:
        • A few yards of your 2- or 3-ply handspun yarn
        • Knitting needles suitable for the yarn you are bringing
        • (It may be helpful if you have already cast-on ~10 to 20 stitches and knitted the beginning of a swatch that you will then practice adding beads to.)
Think you may get to this level after the meeting?

      • Show & Tell --
        • Any follow-ups from angora at the last meeting?
        • Any fun stuff from Greencastle?
        • Anyone have yarn or finished project they would like to share -- an item that you are proud of, or learned from, or was a "first", or ...  to share with others about your spinning journey.
